About the JSON to Excel
Convert an array of JSON objects into a downloadable Excel .xlsx file. Each object becomes a row, and nested fields become dot-notation columns.
Key features
- Creates a real .xlsx workbook, not a CSV
- Live preview table with row and column counts
- Nested fields flattened into dot-notation columns
- Opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice
- Generated in your browser; nothing is uploaded
- Handles thousands of rows
Turn JSON into an Excel spreadsheet
Spreadsheets remain the most common way to share and analyze data in business. When you have JSON from an API, a database export or a webhook log, converting it to Excel (.xlsx) lets finance, operations, marketing and management work with it in the tool they already know: filtering, sorting, pivot tables and charts.
What the converter does
- Each object becomes a row, and each key becomes a column header.
- Nested objects are flattened:
{"address": {"city": "London"}}becomes anaddress.citycolumn. - All keys from all rows are included, so no field is lost even if objects differ.
- A real XLSX file is generated in your browser using the SheetJS library.
Example
[
{ "id": 1, "name": "Laptop", "price": 1299.99, "specs": { "ram": "16GB" } },
{ "id": 2, "name": "Headphones", "price": 199.5, "specs": { "ram": null } }
]
| id | name | price | specs.ram |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Laptop | 1299.99 | 16GB |
| 2 | Headphones | 199.5 |
Why XLSX instead of CSV?
| XLSX | CSV | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens correctly in every Excel locale | ✅ | ❌ (comma vs. semicolon) |
| Numbers stay numeric | ✅ | ⚠️ depends on import |
| Leading zeros and long IDs preserved as text | ✅ when stored as strings | ❌ often mangled |
| Text with commas and line breaks | ✅ | ⚠️ needs quoting |
| File size | Larger (zipped XML) | Smaller |
Tips
- Store IDs as strings in JSON (
"00123") if you need leading zeros preserved. - Remove empty fields with the JSON Cleaner to avoid sparse columns.
- Select only what you need. Use the JSONPath Tester to extract a sub-array before converting.
