About the Excel to JSON

Upload an Excel workbook or CSV file and convert any sheet into an array of JSON objects, using the header row as keys. The file is read in your browser.

Key features

  • Reads .xlsx, .xls, .ods and .csv files
  • Pick any sheet in a multi-sheet workbook
  • Use the first row as keys, or output raw rows as arrays
  • Empty cells become null so every row has the same keys
  • Dates are read as real dates
  • The file never leaves your computer

Convert spreadsheets to JSON

Spreadsheets are where business data lives: product catalogues, price lists, contact lists, translation tables, test data and survey results. Applications and APIs, however, want JSON. This converter reads Excel and CSV files directly in your browser and turns any sheet into a clean JSON array.

Example

nameemailplan
Adaada@example.compro
Alanalan@example.comfree

becomes:

[
  { "name": "Ada", "email": "ada@example.com", "plan": "pro" },
  { "name": "Alan", "email": "alan@example.com", "plan": "free" }
]

With First row is header unchecked, you get arrays instead:

[
  ["name", "email", "plan"],
  ["Ada", "ada@example.com", "pro"],
  ["Alan", "alan@example.com", "free"]
]

Supported formats

Comma-separated.csvSingle sheet

Common uses

  • Seeding a database or CMS from a spreadsheet maintained by a non-developer.
  • Importing products into an e-commerce platform or API.
  • Translation files: convert a sheet of keys and languages into JSON for i18n.
  • Mock data for front-end development.
  • Automations with Zapier, Make or n8n that accept JSON.

Tips for clean output

  • Keep headers simple. Short, unique column names make better JSON keys, e.g. firstName instead of First Name (required).
  • One table per sheet. Notes, totals or blank rows above the header end up in the output.
  • Remove empty values afterwards with the JSON Cleaner, since empty cells are exported as null.

Frequently asked questions

Is my spreadsheet uploaded?

No. The workbook is read by the SheetJS library inside your browser. That makes it safe for payroll, customer lists and other sensitive spreadsheets.

What does 'First row is header' do?

When checked, the first row's cells become the JSON keys and each following row becomes an object. When unchecked, every row becomes an array of cell values.

How are dates converted?

Cells formatted as dates in Excel are converted to ISO 8601 date strings in the JSON output, such as 2026-10-16T00:00:00.000Z.

What about merged cells or formulas?

Formulas are exported as their calculated values. For merged cells, the value appears in the top-left cell only; the other cells are empty.

Is my JSON uploaded to a server?

No. All JSON tools run entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.

Is there a size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Files of several megabytes work fine; very large files depend on your device's memory.

Do I need an account?

No. Every JSON tool is free and works without signing up.
