How to solve a sliding puzzle

Solve it in layers, so you never need to disturb finished parts:

  1. Solve the top row one tile at a time. Place the last two tiles of the row together: put the last tile under its spot, then rotate both in.
  2. Solve the left column the same way.
  3. Repeat on the smaller puzzle that's left, until only a 2×2 or 2×3 area remains.
  4. Cycle the last tiles around the space until they fall into place.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play?

Click a tile in the same row or column as the empty space to slide it (and any tiles between) into the gap. Put the tiles in order from 1 in the top-left, with the empty space in the bottom-right.

Is every puzzle solvable?

Yes. The board is shuffled by making random legal moves from the solved position, so it can always be solved. A random arrangement of tiles would be impossible half of the time.

How are moves counted?

Each tile that moves counts as one move, so sliding three tiles at once counts as three.

What's the minimum number of moves?

Any 3×3 position can be solved in 31 moves or fewer, and any 4×4 position in 80 or fewer. Finding the shortest solution yourself is very hard, so a few hundred moves on 4×4 is normal.

Are the games free?

Yes, all games are completely free, with no sign-up, download or in-game purchases.

Do the games work on phones?

Yes. Every game works with touch as well as a mouse and keyboard, and the boards resize to fit your screen.

Where are my best scores saved?

In your browser on this device. They're never sent to our servers, and clearing your browser data resets them.

What are the daily puzzles?

Sudoku and Word Scramble have a puzzle of the day that is the same for everyone and changes at midnight in your time zone, so you can compare results with friends.
