How to win (or never lose)

  1. Take the centre if you move first. It belongs to four of the eight winning lines.
  2. Otherwise take a corner. Corners belong to three lines each; edges only to two.
  3. Always block when your opponent has two in a line.
  4. Create a fork: a move that makes two lines of two at once. Your opponent can only block one.

Frequently asked questions

Can you beat the unbeatable level?

No. It looks ahead through every possible move, so the best you can do is draw. Getting a draw every time means you're playing perfectly too.

Is tic-tac-toe always a draw?

Yes, if both players make no mistakes. Games are only won when someone misses a threat or a double attack.

Who goes first?

X always moves first. Against the computer, you start the first game and then the starting player alternates.

Is it the same as noughts and crosses?

Yes. Tic-tac-toe is the American name, and noughts and crosses is the British name for the same game.

Are the games free?

Yes, all games are completely free, with no sign-up, download or in-game purchases.

Do the games work on phones?

Yes. Every game works with touch as well as a mouse and keyboard, and the boards resize to fit your screen.

Where are my best scores saved?

In your browser on this device. They're never sent to our servers, and clearing your browser data resets them.

What are the daily puzzles?

Sudoku and Word Scramble have a puzzle of the day that is the same for everyone and changes at midnight in your time zone, so you can compare results with friends.
