How to play

A colour word appears, printed in a coloured ink. Click the button for the ink colour and ignore what the word says. You have 30 seconds. About a quarter of the words match their ink, so you can't simply assume they're always different.

Why psychologists use it

The Stroop test is one of the best-known tasks in psychology. It's used to study selective attention, the ability to focus on one thing while ignoring another, and cognitive control. Your score varies with tiredness and practice, which makes it a fun way to see how focused you are right now.

Number memory test, mental math game, and reaction time test.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Stroop effect?

It's the delay we feel when a word's meaning conflicts with the colour it's printed in. Reading is so automatic that the word interferes with naming the ink colour. It was described by J. Ridley Stroop in 1935.

How is my Stroop effect calculated?

We compare your average time on correct answers where the word and ink match (RED in red) with those where they differ (RED in blue). The difference is your Stroop effect.

What's a good score?

Around 25 to 35 correct answers in 30 seconds with over 90% accuracy is a strong result. A smaller Stroop effect means you're better at ignoring the distraction.

Can I play if I'm colour-blind?

The test uses red, blue, green and yellow, and red–green colour blindness can make it unfair. Treat your results as practice rather than a measurement.

Are the games free?

Yes, all games are completely free, with no sign-up, download or in-game purchases.

Do the games work on phones?

Yes. Every game works with touch as well as a mouse and keyboard, and the boards resize to fit your screen.

Where are my best scores saved?

In your browser on this device. They're never sent to our servers, and clearing your browser data resets them.

What are the daily puzzles?

Sudoku and Word Scramble have a puzzle of the day that is the same for everyone and changes at midnight in your time zone, so you can compare results with friends.
