Frequently asked questions

How does the sleep calculator work?

Sleep runs in cycles of about 90 minutes. The calculator counts back (or forward) in whole cycles, plus the time it takes to fall asleep, so you wake at the end of a cycle rather than in deep sleep.

How many hours of sleep do I need?

Most adults need 7–9 hours a night, which is 5 or 6 cycles. Teenagers need 8–10 hours, and children more.

Why do I feel groggy after a long sleep?

Waking during deep sleep causes 'sleep inertia', a groggy feeling that can last 30 minutes or more. Waking between cycles usually feels easier, even after slightly less sleep.

Are sleep cycles always 90 minutes?

No. They vary from about 80 to 120 minutes between people and through the night. Use the times as a guide and adjust by 10–15 minutes if you still wake up tired.

Are these calculators medical advice?

No. They give general estimates based on established formulas. Talk to a doctor, registered dietitian or qualified coach about your own health, diet or training.

Is my health information stored?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.

Can I use pounds and feet?

Yes. The calculators that need height or weight let you switch between metric (cm, kg) and imperial (ft, in, lb) units.
