Train in the right zone

Heart-rate zones help you train at the right intensity: easy days easy, hard days hard. Enter your age (and resting heart rate, if you know it) to get your five zones.

Frequently asked questions

How is maximum heart rate estimated?

Most simply as 220 minus your age. The Tanaka formula (208 − 0.7 × age) is more accurate for many people, especially over 40. Individual maximums vary by 10 bpm or more, so a field test gives the most accurate number.

What is the Karvonen method?

It uses your heart-rate reserve (maximum minus resting heart rate) to set zones, so they reflect your fitness. Zone heart rate = resting HR + (max HR − resting HR) × intensity.

Which zone burns the most fat?

Zone 2 uses a higher proportion of fat for fuel, and it's sustainable for long sessions. Higher zones burn more total calories per minute, though. A mix of both works well for fitness and weight loss.

How do I measure my resting heart rate?

Count your pulse for 60 seconds right after waking, before getting out of bed, on a few days, and take the average. Most adults are between 60 and 100 bpm; fit people are often lower.

Are these calculators medical advice?

No. They give general estimates based on established formulas. Talk to a doctor, registered dietitian or qualified coach about your own health, diet or training.

Is my health information stored?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.

Can I use pounds and feet?

Yes. The calculators that need height or weight let you switch between metric (cm, kg) and imperial (ft, in, lb) units.
